#solidarity Qualco Foundation: Committed to Greece’s Most Remote Communities
At Qualco Foundation, we believe no one should be left behind — not because of where they live, as recently featured in Capital.gr, our work across Greece’s most remote areas shows how we are closing divides and building bridges. You can read about our mission, key initiatives, and impact in this article:
In an era when geographic distance often translates into social exclusion, the Qualco Foundation emerges as an agent for change, bringing hope, opportunities, and development to Greece’s most remote corners.
“For us at Qualco Foundation, equal access to knowledge, culture, and essential social services is not a privilege; it is a fundamental right. Geographic isolation should not mean social exclusion, and we will continue to be present where the needs are greatest,” says Qualco Foundation’s President, Orestis Tsakalotos. From the Aegean islands to the mountainous regions of Epirus and Thrace, Qualco Foundation acts with a clear mission: to eliminate the inequalities arising from regional isolation, ensuring that no one is left behind because of where they live. Its work is not limited to individual initiatives but is part of a broader strategy to create a society with equal opportunities for all.
A commitment without borders
Qualco Foundation is a non-profit initiative of the Qualco Group, founded in 2022. Since then, it has undertaken over 150 initiatives across Greece, benefiting more than 10,000 individuals. The core philosophy is that access to education, culture, sports, and solidarity should not be limited to urban centres, but should be a fundamental right for every citizen, regardless of their geographic or social situation.
Mr Tsakalotos explains: “Every child, from Arkoi to Zagori, deserves the same opportunities as children in major urban centres. At Qualco Foundation, we create bridges of knowledge, culture, and hope, investing in the future of Greece’s remote communities”. The Foundation’s approach is not about one-off giving, but about sustainable solutions that empower local communities. This is achieved through collaboration with local actors, by understanding each area’s needs, and tailoring interventions to each community’s distinct characteristics.
Life-changing initiatives: From Thrace to the Islands
Empowering people with disabilities in Thrace: In Thrace—a region often facing both geographic and social isolation—Qualco Foundation partnered with ALL: Accessible Limitless Living to support individuals with visual impairments, particularly within the Muslim minority community. “Through a donation from Qualco Foundation, ALL implemented a series of accessibility activations in the wider region of Xathi and in the remote Pomak communities, setting the foundations of equality and inclusion for people with visual impairment”, mentions Paschalina Kalle, trainer in mobility at ALL. The program focuses on mobility training, orientation, and daily living skills, while also training local service providers to better support individuals with disabilities. Additionally, equipment was donated to the Thrace Blind Association to enhance access to public spaces. This project improved participants’ quality of life, sending a strong
Transportation & social inclusion in Rethymno: In the Rethymno region, the lack of transportation was a major barrier for people with disabilities. With support from Qualco Foundation, the Parents’ Association “Agapi” acquired a specially outfitted 7-seater vehicle with a ramp for wheelchairs. Mr Manolis Raptakis, General Director of the Association, explains: “The gift of a 7-seater from Qualco Foundation secured the safe transportation of our beneficiaries, mainly for those who live in remote villages and are unable to move on their own, given that they are in wheelchairs”. This grant enabled safe transportation from remote villages to the Day Care and Daily Support Centre, where members receive education, participate in recreational activities, and receive care. For many, this marked their first opportunity to engage in social activities regularly, enhancing both their self-esteem and independence.
Sports & social activities on Agathonisi: On Agathonisi—a tiny Dodecanese island with just 203 inhabitants—Qualco Foundation worked with the Municipality of Agathonisi, the Aegean Team, and HOPEgenesis to build a multifunctional sports court. This space serves as a hub for sports, recreation, and socialisation, allowing the island’s children to meet, interact, and develop their social skills. The court quickly became a community meeting point.
Education & digital access in remote areas: In the remote zones of mountainous Eastern Zagori and the Dodecanese islands, two students — Alexandros (from Flambourari) and Angelos (from Arkoi) — faced severe educational barriers due to a lack of technology and unstable internet connections. Qualco Foundation provided the necessary equipment and reliable connectivity, enabling them to attend online classes and access educational resources while also fostering digital interaction with peers.
Educational infrastructure in islands & mountain regions: Qualco Foundation has also upgraded educational facilities in remote areas: equipping the playground of the Kythera Nursery School, providing tech resources to the newly established Nursery in Kastelorizo or to the Primary School in Korfovouni (Arta). These projects ensure that children in isolated regions receive a quality education comparable to that in urban areas.
Music education in Koufonisia: In collaboration with the Koufonisia Classical Music Festival, Qualco Foundation supports a Music Education Program for the 20 students on the island. The program offers scholarships, free musical instruments, and lessons in piano, guitar, and music theory, blending traditional local music with more contemporary expression. The initiative not only nurtures artistic talent but also transforms Koufonisia into a small cultural hub in the Aegean.
A society without exclusion: Qualco Foundation demonstrates daily that geographic isolation should not lead to social exclusion. Its actions go beyond simple donations: they are tools for sustainable change that enhance independence, education, and social cohesion. In every community it touches, Qualco Foundation leaves behind not only infrastructure, but also hope and the conviction that no one is alone, and no community is forgotten.
