#culture Inauguration of the exhibition “I think it’s time we listened…”

On April 23, the exhibition’s grand opening, “I think it’s time we listened…” – The Institute of Greek Music Heritage at the Ghika Gallery took place at the exceptional building of the Ghika Gallery of the Benaki Museum. Funded by Qualco Group and Qualco Foundation, it is co-organised by the Institute of Greek Music Heritage (IEMK) and the Benaki Museum.

The exhibition features eleven musical figures (Vamvakaris, Theodorakis, Konstantinidis/Giannidis, Mitropoulos, Xenakis, Xenos, Papaioannou, Sicilianos, Skalkotas, Tsitsanis, Hadjidakis) who shaped Greece’s cultural history in the 20th century. Stavros Xarchakos converses with these 11 composers by bringing forward representative works of Greek song, theatre, and film music. Through audiovisual tools, visitors are immersed in the composers’ world.

During the opening ceremony, Mr Orestis Tsakalotos, President of the Qualco Foundation, delved into Qualco Group’s 20-year philanthropic work and the value of “giving back to society.” He also highlighted the establishment of the Qualco Foundation two years ago to promote Greek cultural heritage and foster creative ideas. He emphasised that IEMK is a major initiative, with this exhibition being its first significant activation.

The Minister of Culture, Dr Lina Mendoni, inaugurated the exhibition and attended a guided tour with Mr Tsakalotos, alongside representatives from IEMK and the Benaki Museum. The event was also attended by the Minister of Labor & Social Security, Ms Domna Michailidou; Minister of State, Mr Makis Voridis; Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ms Elena Rapti; former Ministers Nikos Sifounakis and Mr Yiannis Bratakos; Mr Stavros Xarchakos, and other acclaimed artists.
